Register Now - 46th ISOCARP Congress
19-23 September Kenya

Foremost amongst the urban challenges of the twenty first century is the relentless expansion of many of the world's cities, especially those in the developing world. Under the theme of “Sustainable City/Developing World”, organized with the support of UN Habitat, and as an event of the World Urban Campaign, the 46th ISOCARP congress will explore during three and a half days the scope for more effective planning and management of this growth through the combined perspective of academics, governments and the private sector form both the North and the South. In addition to rich technical content, the congress’ social events will provide delegates significant opportunities for networking and exchange of ideas amongst leading urban planning thinkers and practitioners.

The inaugural day, 20 September, will be held at the United Nations’ complex in Gigiri. The opening plenary will include remarks from representatives of the Government of Kenya and the City of Nairobi at the highest level; the Executive Director of UN-Habitat; Mairura Omwenga, Chairman, Local Organising Committee; and Ismael Fernández Mejía, President, ISOCARP.

The plenary will continue with keynote presentations to be delivered by Prof Mona Serageldin, Vice President at the Institute of International Urban Development, and former professor at Harvard University; Lamia Kamal-Chaoui, Head of Directorate for Public Governance and Territorial Development, OECD; and Stuart Clarkson, CEO Africa, Siemens.

These presentations will be followed in the afternoon by the presentation of the outcome of the ISOCARP Young Planners workshops in Kenya, the work undertaken by the ISOCARP Urban Planning Advisory Teams throughout the year, and the Congress Introduction by the General Rapporteur.

The following days (21-23 September )the congress will be held at the Kenya International Conference Centre, one of Africa’s prime conference venues, located right in the heart of Nairobi. A number of special sessions would include:

  • a training seminar organized by UN Habitat, which will provide participants practical tools to better face urban development challenges
  • a session co-hosted by the Urban Planning Society of China, which will introduce a selection of best planning practices in China
  • a session by the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, which will introduce the Making Cities Resilient campaign and provide a
    follow-up on Haiti
  • a session with Habitat Professionals Forum, discussing the HPF Charter introduced at the World Urban Forum in Rio
  • a presentation on the 100 Cities Initiative, part of the World Urban Campaign
  • technical presentations by Siemens, Arnaiz Consultores and the NESTtown Project in Ethiopia.

More than 120 presentations by international experts will be distributed on four parallel workshops, under the sub-themes of effective policy-making for sustainable urbanization; the impact of spatial planning, urban design and built form on urban sustainability; urban planning instruments for sustainability; and improving governance for sustainable urban development.

First Call to Register - ISWA World Congress 2010

113 paper- and 47 poster presentations structured by 12 topics reflecting the multidiciplary, multiscalar character of peri-urban land use relationships and sustainability assessment. Scenario, and modelling approaches at different scales are topics of the conference together with governance systems, quality of life, economic assessment, multi-functionality, and finally instruments and tools.

The conference is the final scientific event of the PLUREL project: PERI-URBAN LAND USE RELATIONSHIPS – STRATEGIES AND SUSTAINIBILITY ASSESSMENT TOOLS FOR URBAN-RURAL LINKAGES, an Integrated Project under EU’s 6th Framework Programme for Research,
