New UO graduate certificate program focuses on sustainability and cities
The University of Oregon is one of the first universities to offer a one-year graduate certificate program in sustainable practices for the built environment.
Oregon Leadership in Sustainability (OLIS) is a one-year, full-time interdisciplinary program for students of all backgrounds with a bachelor's degree. The program addresses the need for future leaders in the public, private and nonprofit sectors in fields such as water, waste, transportation and land use.
The program is led by Dr. Vicki Elmer, a former city manager in Eugene, one-time planning director for the City of Berkeley in California and former professor at the University of California.
"This program was established by the Oregon University System to educate the next generation of sustainability leaders," Elmer said. "It’s a one year ‘boot camp’ for 20 to 30 students who want to immerse themselves in the skills and knowledge necessary to help make sustainable cities a reality.”
The program includes four required core courses from the Planning Department, the Business School, the Architecture Department and Environmental Studies. Students will also participate in three “practicums” with a local client city. The fall term will focus on preparation of sustainability plans and carbon inventories. The winter and spring practicums will develop an eco-district plan for a local city. There is also a leadership component which focuses on self knowledge, working in teams, organizations and communities. Communications skills are also taught.
OLIS applications are currently being accepted for the fall of 2011 through September 12. Classes begin Monday September 19th.

Urban Management Masters Course at Berlin University of Technology
The Urban Management Master Course was accredited in 2004 and started in the fall of 2005. The internationally recognized Master of Science Degree in Urban Management is awarded for the successful completion of the program. This degree also provides eligibility to register for PhD programmes in Germany and the rest of Europe.
The three-semester Master Course in Urban Management is open for graduates from various disciplines. It has a focus on development situations in the South and transition countries. The course offers training in management approaches that cross the boundaries of isolated professional knowledge and aims to present workable solutions for city management. The issues addressed are related to the most urgent problems of urban development in many countries, including environmental degradation, uncontrolled urban growth, insecure land tenure, substandard housing conditions for the urban poor, and inadequate decision making and local planning systems. Teaching draws on case studies and experience gained by local governments, NGOs, and the private sector. German language courses are offered throughout the first year. The course language is English.
The duration of the Master Course is 3 semesters including a master thesis. Two semesters are reserved for classes at the Technical University Berlin. The third semester is dedicated to further specialization and the preparation of a master thesis. Topics addressing issues derived from problems in the students’ home countries are encouraged. The program also involves internships in relevant institutions in Germany or abroad.
The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 25 people per course. Most of the students will come from non-European countries. Graduates from Germany and other EU countries planning a career in development organizations are also invited to apply. The course is open to graduates from any country holding a bachelor degree or an equivalent in urban development-related fields.

Master of Urban Development and Design (MUDD)
at the University of New South Wales,
Faculty of Built Environment (UNSW BE)
The MUDD Program at UNSW BE is a multidisciplinary program that explores the inter-relationship of urban development and design from an international perspective.
Urban design is approached as a comparative discipline and cities from Europe, the Americas, the Middle East and Australasia are examined through studio based design projects.
The course explores both the universal values of urban environments, and the unique aspects of cities around the world. Traditionally, urban design programs have had a limited view of the city as merely another large scale physical design exercise, ignoring the economic, environmental and political aspects of cities. At the core of our philosophy is the need to recognise that good design must respect these three crucial factors in urban design education.
Our intensive one year program involves two academic semesters of study plus a summer term and includes a compulsory field project based in a major Asian? Is only an Asian? city. It also includes a compulsory international urban design studio working with universities andor planning agencies in a major city of the world. Each year students are given a choice of two cities and in the past five years, the Program has undertaken urban projects in Buenos Aires, Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Delhi, Tokyo, Budapest, Hangzhou, Istanbul, Nagoya and Madrid.
The international urban design studio is the final experience of the course which involves the deployment of knowledge and skills in an intense two week workshop in a totally new city and new culture, combined with critical reflection on this experience, design development and documentation back in Sydney.
Professional Accreditation
The program is accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia.

MSc. Urban Development Planning at UCL
The central focus of the MSc Urban Development Planning (UDP) is international practices in urban development policy, planning and management addressing spatial, socio-economic and political transformation in Africa, Asia, Middle East and Latin America.
The objective of the course is to equip participants to work effectively as development practitioners in urban contexts, whether at policy or delivery levels, through a deeper understanding of the processes that generate urban change, and to enhance their diagnostic and strategic capacities to respond to such change within the framework of socially just urban governance.
While the focus of the programme is explicitly on the intersection of such processes and planning practice in the context of cities in the developing world (the global South), the knowledge, methodologies and skills obtained during the MSc are nevertheless applicable to urban processes occurring in the developed global North as well.
The course is primarily focused on the city, and is concerned with urban policy formulation, planning and implementation through management, explicitly addressing the power relations present in the urban context and the dynamics of engagement between the different institutional actors. In this sense, it promotes a deeper understanding of community-led urban development in partnership with other actors, based on political economy, socio-cultural and spatial perspectives on urban policy, planning and management. Examining specific case studies in cities of the global South and North, it emphasises the importance of scaling-up processes and practices from the neighbourhood / locality to the city level.
The course benefits from having an interdisciplinary group of students that can provide different and complementary perspectives, resulting in rich discussion and debate.
