Zero net energy buildings: strategy update at SB08

A report outlining an action plan to create a world with zero net energy buildings will be released at SB08. The report is an update of the Energy Efficiency in Buildings (EEB) project of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

The EEB project envisages that by 2050, zero net energy buildings will be the norm in most developed countries. The WBCSD is a CEO-led global association of some 200 companies dealing exclusively with business and sustainable development.

Bill Sisson, Director of Sustainability at United Technologies Corporation and co-chair of the EEB Project, will address SB08 and present an assessment of which policies have the greatest influence in achieving zero net energy buildings in different sub-markets.

SB08 is being held in Melbourne on 21-25 September 2008. Prof. Bill Rees, who originated the concept of the ‘ecological footprint’, will open the conference.

SB08 will have more than 40 acclaimed international speakers who will shake up conventional thinking on sustainable building.

Register Now - The Ideal City; new perspectives for the 21st century

October 11-14

The Ideal City Conference in Amsterdam (October 11 to 14) has slashed registration fees by $100 until August 1, 2008 for Urbanicity.org subscribers. Please see the newly updated program which is rapidly filling up with an array of speakers from around the world--Egypt, Canada, United States, Netherlands, Nigieria, Indonesia, Italy, and France.

Amsterdam is known as the “Venice of the North.” Progressives have called Amsterdam an ideal city when measured by the standard of social justice. Holland has what many call a “radical,” “progressive,”“unique” and for some a “sinful” approach to housing, drug laws, transportation, prostitution, crime, brown fields, and urban design.

The Netherlands has turned conventional urban policy and planning programs upside down and found innovative ways to solve social problems. Many visitors who come to Holland come away shocked, amazed, impressed and changed forever. Holland is controversial. Indeed, Amsterdam is a laboratory of innovation that provides a national model for the rest of the world. It’s a place where we can honor their successes and learn from their errors in urban policy and planning. Without a doubt, Holland is also the home of world class architecture that is envied around the world. Many of the social, economic, and environmental problems facing Amsterdam are considerably less than cities in the United States and in many cases Western Europe. Amsterdam, at this moment in history, might be the world's greatest city because of its ability to ensure basic necessities, freedom and creativity. Tolerance of drugs, sexual freedom, along with integration of different races helps reduce many of the "social problems" faced by most cities. http://www.hollandnow.org/ has more information.

First Announcement
- Futuropolis 2058

October 21-22

For millennia, scientific innovations have played critical roles in the development of civilizations around the world, and they are also the main driving force behind the great industrial revolutions that shape many of today’s societies.

Unfortunately, the use of many of these modern technologies has also created unprecedented stress on our global climate. Ironically, the key to alleviating this problem might come from advances in science and technology.

“Futuropolis 2058: Creating Sustainable Urban Environments through Innovation” is a two day conference initiated by Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Fulbright Academy of Science & Technology. It aims to bring together the world’s most respected technical experts and visionaries to shape the thinking and practice of urban leaders. The conference will function as a catalyst to influence how the urban environments of the future are studied, planned and managed through areas such as urban infrastructure, city management, housing, sustainable energy, social networking technologies and transportation systems.

The program will include panel discussions, poster sessions, workshops and presentations on technologies, trends and emerging scientific research that could support sustainable metropolises of the future.
