Master of Urban Design - Melbourne School of Design

The graduate courses in urban design at the University of Melbourne help develop professionals who are capable of seeing the city from multiple viewpoints and who relish working with interdisciplinary teams.

The Postgraduate Diploma equips students with the skills necessary to undertake design research and to learn about urban history, theory and communications. Successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma can lead to admission to the Master of Urban Design, a studio-based course in which students gain expert knowledge, enabling them to forge a career in urban design or a related field.

The key quality of the urban design programs, and particularly the Master of Urban Design, are their combined strength of urban design theory and three design studios. Studio projects are always approached as design research exercises, where innovation and discovery represent a major part of the educational experience. Studios emphasise the importance of place and fieldwork represents a significant component of studio work. Professional and wider community involvement is a regular part of the Master of Urban Design studio experience.

Register Now - 15th International Metropolis Conference
October 4-8, Netherlands

The City of The Hague will be hosting the 15th International Metropolis Conference from October 4 to 8 in the World Forum Convention Centre (WFCC). The conference is a prestigious international event dealing with the topics of migration, integration and citizenship. The 2010 International Metropolis Conference in The Hague focuses on questions of belonging.

Justice and Migration: Paradoxes of Belonging
It will deal with various aspects of belonging, the opportunities and challenges it poses in the context of legitimacy and justification of processes of migration and integration, as well as their consequences for social policies. In doing so this conference will contribute to a better understanding of how governments and international bodies can deal with different forms of belonging in multicultural societies and a globalized world. The question of belonging is a key question in contemporary societies due to international migration and mobility of people across borders and their subsequent participation in the host society. Governments are faced with different and sometimes competing forms of belonging in their population. Questions about the legitimacy of citizenship claims can loom large depending on how states and citizens perceive migrants and how the meaning of citizenship is constructed.

Who should attend?

The 2010 International Metropolis Conference will be of interest to policy makers, administrators and representatives from non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as well as academic researchers. Metropolis wants to reach everyone with a professional interest in international migration and urban management issues. Graduate students and interested stakeholders in the private sector are encouraged to attend this event. Register now for International Metropolis Conference 2010

To keep fully up to date you can subscribe to the monthly Metropolis E-Newsletter
