Attention all Universities and Education Institutes

In September of this year we will be publishing a special Urban Education issue of our City Matters Bulletin. This will be sent directly to all our 124,000 subscribers worldwide.

The issue will feature a range of courses and degrees of all kinds - undergradute, postgraduate/Masters, short, executive and online covering urban management, development, planning and related issues.
The opportunity to feature educational programmes in this issue will be limited to a maximum of 20 institutions worldwide. It will provide a very efficient, direct and cost effective way in which to reach out to potential international students.

There are seven remaining features available.

Each feature will include a 200 word course summary, logo and links to course pages at your website. If you wish to use the feature to highlight multiple courses, that will be fine. The Urban Education Special Issue has come about as a result of subscriber feedback who have requested more coverage of this sector, and it will become a twice-yearly product.
The cost of each feature is Euros500 / US$700 / A$650 (Other currencies available on request). If you wish to book for the second issue as well, there will be a series discount of 20% available.

First Announcement - An International Workshop on Innovation, Diversity and Sustainable Development in Areas of Social Vulnerability


Center for Rebuilding Sustainable Communities after Disasters, University of Massachusetts Boston & Chair in Multiculturalism , University of São Paulo, Brazil
November 17-18, 2011

This workshop aims to discuss strategies for the empowerment of residents in the areas of social vulnerability and the implementation of public policies with a sustainable basis, in such areas. We are interested in examining the following issues, amongst others, and welcome papers/proposals related to them:

  • Strategies for sustainable development in areas of social vulnerability
  • Strategies for population empowerment and the elimination of humiliations connected to social vulnerability and/or gender, age, ethnic, race, sexual orientation and disabilities
  • Children and youth care and empowerment in areas of social vulnerability
  • Strategies for sustainable urbanization against flooding and other kind of disasters due to climate changes or lack of public policies
  • Establishing indicators of social vulnerability and sustainable development
  • Strategies for fundraising to assist in the development of vulnerable areas before and after disasters

The theme of the 47th Congress is : "Liveable Cities - Urbanising World, Meeting the Challenge". This theme reflects the central problem of the acknowledged world wide phenomena of the exponential and inexorable inward flow of people to cities and the consequent rapid expansion of urban development. The city of Wuhan, with its ever increasing population base, has acknowledged the importance of this Congress Theme especially with regard to learning how their particular range of urban, transportation congestion and spatial problems are being dealt with sustainably across the Globe. The Congress will support four workshops exploring the major theme in terms of low carbon environments, sustainable networks, all transportation pathways including waterways, recreational provisions, Heritage and the Green Environment.

There will be, in addition to the four topical workshops, selected half day workshops such as one being offered by the City of Wuhan and the Centre for Liveable Cities, Singapore.

Course Feature

Part-time MSc in Sustainable Urban Development at the University of Oxford

This two-year Master’s programme is offered by Oxford’s Continuing Professional Development Centre in association with the Prince's Foundation for the Built Environment. Both intellectually rigorous and strongly grounded in professional practice, it is aimed at professionals worldwide who are working across the sustainable urban development sector. Through meaningful and state-of-the-art learning, it provides opportunities for employers to develop their workforce and for individuals to enhance their career prospects.

With an interdisciplinary focus, the programme is taught by leading researchers and practitioners from Oxford and other major academic and professional institutions. The flexible, modular structure of the programme has been designed to suit busy professionals.

During two years, students attend eight intensive one-week teaching sessions in Oxford and London comprising lectures, seminars, practice-based workshops and one-to-one tutorials; together these are aimed at developing and sharing concerns for social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainable living.

Assessment is through assignments and a dissertation (which can be on a work-based project), and students are supported throughout via a web-based portal, providing access to a rich bank of e-learning materials and class discussion forums. Current students work in nine countries across five continents. Their professional areas include sustainable building design, integration of public and commercial space, the social and environmental impact of city planning, conservation projects, legal frameworks and capital investment …so group discussions are understandably lively and stimulating!
