Call for Papers - Sustainable City and Creativity

The International Meeting on "Sustainable City and Creativity: Promoting Creative Urban Initiatives" will be held in Naples on 24,25,26 September 2008.


The aim of the Meeting is to analyze in depth principles and practices of the creative city for the formulation of policy lessons and recommendations able to contribute to the building of a creative city.

In particular, the attention will be focused on the following issues:


1. what is a creative city; how the creative city actually works, which are the key features and the critical elements conditioning creativity; how ideas turn into urban innovations; the drivers stimulating a city to innovate, the barriers and the constraints;
2. which are the benefits of the creative city in terms of competitiveness, environment, welfare, social stability, quality of life, vitality;
3. which are the key assets, infrastructures and tools required to promote creative processes in cities towards competitive, sustainable and cohesive places, and how public policy can influence the creative city.

The Conference will involve representatives from Universities, Research Centers, international and national public Institutions, business sector and civil society.

Register Now - Rebuilding sustainable communities for children and their families after disasters
November 16-19, 2008

This conference will focus on four main objectives:

  • The role of gender equality in alleviating poverty and assisting children, their families and their communities after disasters;
  • The status of children and women in various communities after disasters and the continuing need for superior research and appropriate data;
  • The roles of governments, the private sector, and non-governmental organizations; and,
  • The promotion of human dignity in the creation of sustainable environments that empower families in the aftermath of disasters.

The conference will seek to contribute to, and recommend, future policy formulation and implementation processes by local, regional and national governments as well as multilateral agencies and grass-roots organizations. The goal of these efforts is to bring specialists from various disciplines (health, education, community planning, etc.) to explore and make recommendations on how to reconstruct sustainable communities that will be safe for children and their families after disasters.

The 3rd World Forum on Human Rights will take place at the International Convention Centre of Nantes Métropole (France) from Monday 30th June to Thursday 3rd July 2008.


The Forum of Nantes was created, from the start (in 2004), to support and develop the networks of actors involved in the protection, the respect and the implementation of the Human Rights by strengthening the solidarity between these different actors (political leaders, NGO activists, academics and international experts, representatives of international organisations...). Therefore, open discussions, exchange of opinions and free dialogue, on an equal footing are necessary: this is the reason why the World Forum on Human Rights exists. On the latest edition, 1,200 participants and speakers, representing more than 70 different nationalities, were gathered.


In this year of 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 3rd Forum of Nantes will focus on the following topics:


- Monday 30th June 2008 – 60 years after… The pertinence of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
- Tuesday 1st July 2008 – Human Rights, between economic globalisation and international solidarity.

Among these distinguished speakers are mayors from ‘model cities’, such as Mr John So, Mayor of Melbourne, repeatedly voted one of the world’s most liveable cities; Mr Hiroshi Nakada, Mayor of Yokohama, a city lauded for the use of environmentally-friendly urban transportation; and Ms Kerry Prendergast, Mayor of Wellington, where the UN Environment Programme will hold World Environment Day 2008.

The inaugural event will also provide engaging platforms for discussions on specific topics through its plenary and various break-out sessions, including one on solid waste management, a critical issue in many urban areas. Final Call to Register - ENHR 2008

The 2008 ENHR Conference will be held in Dublin from 6th- 9th July and is being organised by University College Dublin School of Applied Social Science and The Centre for Housing Research. The conference theme is Shrinking Cities, Sprawling Suburbs, Changing Countrysides. The conference will address various issues relevant to this overarching theme in both urban and rural locations. Plenary sessions will address current debates on topics such as balancing regional development, urban and rural development, socio-spatial segregation, new suburban communities, the role of immigration and tourism, developments in post socialist societies, as well as issues which are specific to rural areas.
