Dunkerque 2010 conference: Delivering Sustainable Cities
Dear colleagues,
We have the pleasure to invite you to the 6th European Sustainable Cities and Towns Conference, being held on the 19 - 21 May in Dunkerque, France.
This event is the next large conference in Europe to address climate change after Copenhagen 2009 (COP-15) and it will offer a unique opportunity to position local governments as willing partners and leaders on emissions reductions and innovative solutions.
Dunkerque 2010 will explore how sustainable development can help local governments to face the current economic, social and climate challenges and how it can be further implemented in the current context of crisis.
During this major conference, mayors and high-level business representatives will have an unprecedented chance for face-to-face discussion on how to better cooperate towards eco-efficient cities and sustainable communities.
The event will also convene key representatives of European institutions and international organisations to deliver a political message on climate and the wider local sustainability agenda ahead of COP 16 in Mexico and the Earth Summit 2012 in Rio de Janeiro.
The programme: quality, variety and relevance
The conference programme brings together the expertise of several national and European networks of local governments and numerous partner organisations in a joint effort to reach out to local governments all over Europe and present the most innovative
examples.
It features committed politicians and technical experts from local authorities from Europe and other part of the world, internationally renowned experts and prestigious representatives from EU institutions, business and other organisations. Some of these outstanding speakers have already confirmed their participation, including:
- Jeremy Rifkin, President of the Foundation on Economic Trend and Bestselling Author
- Rajendra Pachauri, Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change & Nobel Peace Prize Winner 2007
- Ken Livingston, International Urban adviser & Former Mayor of London
- Johannes Hahn, Commissioner for Regional Policy, European Commission.

The largest networking event and a milestone for local sustainability in Europe
After the success of Aalborg 1994, Lisbon 1996, Hannover 2000, Aalborg 2004 and Sevilla 2007, more than 1500 representatives from different sectors are expected to attend Dunkerque 2010.
Over the course of the 3 conference days, participants will be taken on a journey through the landscape of local sustainability activities in Europe, touching upon international trends and local innovation, political networking and key messages for the future.
This great conference will mark an additional step in the concrete mobilisation of local governments and their significant role in the field of sustainable development.
European local governments have the power and potential for bold local actions and visionary collaboration; join us in Dunkerque and contribute to make Dunkerque 2010 the most prominent, triennal, local sustainability rendezvous in Europe.
