An Urbanicity Conference Alert for Global Mayors Forum 20010 - web version

The Global Mayors Forum  -  a major international event for senior local government and urban development stakeholders

On behalf of the Council of the Global Mayors Forum (GMF), I am writing to sincerely invite you to be a distinguished participant in the inaugural Global Mayors Forum to be held in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China during November 5-8, 2010.

Over the past four years, the GMF has been well progressing since its initiation. On April. 22nd, 2008, the first press conference of the GMF successfully came to an end in Hong Kong. Unexpectedly, a global Financial Tsunami suddenly broke out afterwards. Admittedly, the outbreak of the financial crisis has become a big shock to us all, we, organizers of the GMF, are facing the same economic challenge that has been placed before all mayoral attendees and other participants like city operators and investors. However, despite the adversity, we steadily hold the belief that, in such an unfavorable situation, it is necessary to stand side by side with mayors and city stakeholders, to exchange ideas, share resources, strengthen cooperation and conquer the hardship. Thus we insist on carrying out the GMF. It is firmly believed that, in this circumstance, to obtain the strength and might from each other to overcome obstacles is a top priority and a must. As well, I strongly believe that you, as a bold and responsible individual, are ready to stand and work with us shoulder to shoulder, to support the forum and meet with the challenges.

Themed “High Growth Cities: Meeting the Challenges for Sustainability”, the first Global Mayor Forum will discuss hot topics and relevant problems to be urgently solved in the process of global urban development, thus to explore an approach for urban sustainable development. Meanwhile, as to better assist the city stakeholders reacting to the crisis and striving for mutual development, the Forum will feature a number of activities, including Urban Promotion Conference, Project Promotion and Roundtable Sessions, providing diversified business platforms for mayors, city operators and investors to discuss and cooperate.

While we are unswervingly progressing the forum as scheduled, N1H1 virus spreads globally. For the safety of all attendees, the GMF Council determines to adjust the date from September 15th-18th, 2009 to November 5th- 8th, 2010, with the host cities to be both in Hong Kong and Shenzhen, China.

Hong Kong, a model city best displaying the integration of Eastern and Western cultures, her thriving economy, vibrant culture, excellent urban management achievements and unique attraction enable her to be the host city for the inaugural Global Mayors Forum. When you get closer, feel and appreciate Hong Kong-- "the Pearl of the Orient", you will be impressed by the tremendous accomplishments she has made. Shenzhen, the neighbouring Chinese city with the fastest developing speed in urbanization, and a city to be referred as “mushroomed overnight”, when you get familiar with her 30-year history, you will be deeply amazed.

I believe this twin-city tour initiated by the 2010GMF Steering Committee will bring you an unprecedented experience and as well, you will be able to comprehend the cultures that the Chinese cities have brought along, which are also what we have been striving for. With delight and joy, I look forward to meeting you at the upcoimg Global Mayors Forum in the fall of 2010.
