Housing is more than just a physical (financial) asset. It is a vital necessity and one which has a direct effect on our health and well- being.

This is true for everyone, especially for the more vulnerable members of society - the very young, the elderly, those with disabilities and limitations, those too sick to go to work or school, and the unemployed. These will spend more time in and around housing, will place the greatest demands on it, and are more likely to be the most affected by unsatisfactory conditions.

This, the fifth Warwick conference on health and housing, will be an opportunity to review recent developments both in the evidence for the relationship between the housing environment and health, and in the policies and practices directed at improving health and well-being through housing interventions.

The conference is organised by the Safe and Healthy Housing Unit of Warwick Law School in collaboration with the World Health Organisation Regional Office for Europe. It is supported and sponsored by the Chartered Institute for Environmental Health, the Building Research Establishment Trust, the Medical Studies Department of EDF & Gaz de France, l'Agence national de l'habitat (France), the United Kingdom Public Health Association and Killgerm.

Programme themes:

  • Health based auditing/assessment of housing
  • The cost of poor housing
  • Energy precariousness
  • Urban pests and pests in housing
  • Children in housing
  • The elderly and housing
  • Housing and home accidents
  • Indoor air quality
  • Improvement and replacement of unhealthy housing
  • Local and national housing policies
  • Regulations, standards, and obligations

Who should attend:

The conference will provide a unique opportunity for cross-disciplinary and international discussion focusing on policy-relevant research to inform practice. It will be of particular interest to lawyers and academics, architects, environmental health officers, public and community health physicians, general practitioners, housing managers, health visitors and tenant organisations.
