The modules of the master program guarantee the academic depth of the study, while at the same time complementary activities of more practical focus are build in the program to link the learning to your own work environment.
Applicants have to select one of the following eight specialisations in offer:
- Housing: The Functioning of the Housing Sector: Policies, Theories and Finance
- Urban Environment: Environmental Policy and Assessment
- Urban Social Development: Livelihood Strategies and Social Sector Policies
- Land Development Strategies
- Managing Urban Governance: Managing Complex Networks
- Urban and Regional Development Strategies
- Infrastructure & Energy, Water and Waste Water Management
- Innovations in Financing Cities
Course Content
The course is structured over three periods as follows:
1. Foundation Module
A common, one and a half week foundation module, with activities that introduce key issues of urban policy, management and governance, and preparing a common ground of trends and innovations in all eight fields of the specializations offered, e.g. Housing Development Strategies, Urban Environmental Management, Urban Social Development, Managing Urban Governance, Land Development Strategies, Urban and Regional Development Strategies, Urban Infrastructure Management and Urban Finance.
2. Specialization Period
There are two periods with each a four weeks specialization module. Participants have to follow one compulsory module in their own specialization, while the second module is an optional to be selected from the other specializations in offer. In this way participants can specialize in their professional field but at the same time have an opportunity to broaden their horizon in another subject of relevance and interest.
During this specialization period the participants of the ICHUD thus split up over the selected modules and join together with the master programme students who have chosen the same modules.
While the master students work on their thesis proposals and prepare for exams, the participants of the ICHUD are engaged in additional individual learning activities (and thus don’t sit for the exams!) that have a more applied academic orientation, where theory is directly related to the practice and by linking the learning to their own work environment. This will result in a so called Individual Study paper in the field of the chosen specialization.
In between the two 4-weeks modules, the 3-month participants join together for a 1-week Action Planning module.
3. Closing Period
During the 2 weeks closing period, students finalize and present their individual study papers.
