The courses of the master program guarantee the academic depth of the study, while at the same time complementary activities of more practical focus are build in the program to link the learning to your own work environment.
Course Curriculum
The course has a practical orientation, combining field experience with conceptual frameworks and methodologies. Lecturers will introduce key topics, which will be reinforced by readers, case studies, group discussions, assignments and exercises designed to draw on the accumulated expertise of the students.
The course is structured over three periods as follows:
A common, two and a half week foundation module, with activities that introduce key issues of urban policy, management and governance, and preparing a common ground of trends and innovations in all six fields of the specialisations offered, e.g. Housing Development Strategies, Urban Environmental Management, Urban Social Development, Managing Urban Governance, Land Development Strategies, and Urban and Regional Development Strategies.
The specialisation period has a duration of 8 weeks. Two specialisation courses of each four weeks in-depth analysis are offered in the selected specialisation. During each of the four weeks participants have to follow two parallel courses: one course in their own specialisation and one course to be chosen from the other specialisations in offer. In this way participants can specialize in their field of interest but at the same time have an opportunity to tough on some other relevant subjects as well.
During this specialisation period the participants of the ICHUD thus split up over the selected Master courses and join together with the master programme students who have chosen the same courses. While the master students work on their thesis proposals and prepare for their exams, the participants of the ICHUD are engaged in additional learning activities that have a more practical orientation by linking the learning to their own work environment (and thus don’t sit for exams!). This will result in a so called Individual Study paper in the field of the chosen specialisation
During the 2 weeks closing period, students finalise and present their individual study papers.
