Transport and Innovation: Unleashing the Potential - The International Transport Forum 2010

The International Transport Forum will be held in Leipzig on 26-28 May 2010, focusing on Innovation in Transport. This event is being organised under the Presidency of Canada.

The International Transport Forum, part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), brings together 52 countries to advance the transport policy agenda, and ensure that it contributes to sustainable development, prosperity, social inclusion and the protection of human life and well-being. Every year, Ministers meet in Leipzig, Germany, with decision makers and top thinkers from business, civil society, international organisations, and research.

The annual Forum includes high-level panel discussions, as well as workshops, and an exhibition. It is attended by over 800 senior-level representatives from a wide range of sectors. Past speakers have included Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany; Ray LaHood, US Secretary of Transportation; Antonio Tajani, Transport Commissioner for the European Union; and Rajendra Pachauri, Chairman of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Nobel Prize winner.

Programme and Speaker update

The Initiator and Chairman of Solar Impulse, Bertrand Piccard, Piccard will be joining Ministers of Transport, high-level experts from industry, civil society, the public sector and researchers from around the world to discuss the role of innovation in shaping transport systems of the future.

A prototype of Piccard’s solar-powered airplane carried out its maiden flight on 7 April. Piccard is now preparing for a non-stop flight around the world autonomously, propelled only by solar energy. “We are looking forward to hearing from an inspiring man who is challenging traditional thinking in transport,” said Jack Short, Secretary General of the International Transport Forum at the OECD.

  • Amar Bhidé, Kennedy School, Harvard University, author of “The Venturesome Economy: How Innovation Sustains Prosperity in a More Connected World” (2008)
  • Robin Chase, Co-founder and former CEO of Zipcar, an innovative car-sharing service and current CEO of GoLoco.org, which brings together carpooling and social networking
  • Cyrille du Peloux, CEO of Véolia Transport, leading private sector provider of innovative transport solutions
  • Ian Goldin, Director of the James Martin 21st Century School at the University of Oxford, one of the foremost global centres of research on the future
  • Rüdiger Grube, CEO of Deutsche Bahn AG, the German Railway system
  • Geraldine Knatz, Executive Director, Port of Los Angeles
  • Henry Li, Senior Director of Build your Dreams (ByD) Auto, the Chinese car manufacturer
  • Wolfgang Mayrhuber, CEO of Lufthansa
  • John Micklethwait, Editor-in-Chief, The Economist
  • Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Volkswagen AG / Porsche Automobil Holding SE
  • Christopher Ward, Executive Director, New York and New Jersey Port Authority
  • Katsuaki Watanabe, Vice Chairman and Director, Toyota Motors

Side Events

Several side events, including the Bi- Annual Roundtable of the Global Fuel Economy Initiative (GFEI) will take place in Leipzig during the Forum. The GEFI Roundtable on the 27 May will take stock of the work of ITF and its partners IEA, UNEP and FIA Foundation on CO2 and fuel economy standards, tax incentives, scrapping schemes and other measures to drive innovation for cleaner cars, and set a path for future work. All Forum participants are invited to attend.
