An Urbanicity alert for IWA World Water Congress 2010

IWA World Water Congress

IWA World Water Congress and Exhibition

19–24 September 2010 Montréal, Canada

Register as a delegate – Early Bird closes 1 July 2010

The IWA World Water Congress and Exhibition is a high-profile international event attracting 4,500 water professionals and organisations from across the globe to advance their common goal of sustainable water management. The Congress programme presents an array of exciting streams for people interested in urban and urban water management issues.

One of the highlights is the two-day two-day Cities of the Future stream, which engages an interdisciplinary community of environmental and water engineers, urban and social planners, architects, landscape designers and city managers in considering the possibilities of cities of the future – and the central model water management plays in these new models.

Human population growth, rising incomes and increased urbanization are colliding with resource limits and global warming to create an imperative for change in urban water management in both the developing and developed regions. Cities of the Future represents an acknowledgement by leaders in the water sector that the current, most predominately used techniques for water supply, wastewater treatment and stormwater management do not reflect the growing realities of a changing global context. Therefore the need to develop new cross disciplinary approaches is greater than ever.

The IWA Cities of the Future Programme is about ‘learning by doing’ and developing novel approaches to test new concepts and technologies which must be implemented to gain broader acceptance and relevance.

Other program highlights include:

  • Forum on Urban Disaster Resiliency - The workshop aims to reinforce disaster response capability and encourage the building of environmentally sustainable water and sanitation systems in vulnerable regions as well as less developed and emerging countries.
  • Rainwater Harvesting and Management - The workshop will look at role of rainwater in the context of society, the environment and the economy. Presentations will include examples of cities that have adopted revolutionary rainwater management systems in the urban context.
  • Climate Change – the stream includes a range of sessions from impacts to adaptive strategies and water resources management.
  • World renown keynote speakers including: Arjun Thapan, Director General of the Asian Development Bank’s South East Asia department; William Cosgrove, a former vice president of the World Bank, past-president of the World Water Council and chairman of the International Steering Committee of the Dialogue on Water and Climate as well as Chad Holiday, former CEO and Chairman of DuPont, currently serving as an Executive in Residence at Vanderbilt University Business School and Chairman Emeritus of the Council on Competitiveness.

The key congress themes include: Cities of the future; Managing utilities and their assets; Science and application of water management; Securing new and traditional water sources for the future; Water, ecosystems and catchments; Water and health and Water, climate and energy.

Alongside the IWA World Water Congress, IWA organises an exhibition, where leading international companies and organisations will display their products and services. There are still a few booths available, for more information and bookings please contact Marlies Grijns at info@iwa-exhibitions.com

In 2010, the International Water Association (IWA) is partnering with the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association and the Canadian Association on Water Quality to hold the biannual event in Montréal, Canada. Principal sponsors of the Congress are ITT, Suez Environnement and Veolia Water.
